How Common Core Can Inspire Kids To Become Engineers
Many children dream of becoming engineers someday. This is not at all surprising as becoming an engineer is one of the most fulfilling and noble jobs in the world. This ambition can be attributed to the fact that at an early age, children are taught to create and construct figures with their building blocks. To further inspire and prepare kids to become engineers, some educational experts and teachers have devised the Common Core Standards.
Common Core is a set of guidelines created by school experts intending to prepare the young students of today for college or work in the future. Compared to the traditional educational methods that most schools have, the distinctive features that the Common Core curriculum has are: one, the preparation for the future starts at an early age; and two, the guidelines have been developed to focus on the English language arts and Mathematics.
Entering an engineering profession perceptibly means that one has to be knowledgeable in the world of mathematics. With dimensions, lengths and other forms of measurements as the normal concepts, a child must then be fully equipped with an education which is packed with mathematical lessons – and the Common Core curriculum does. The standards promise a coherent foundation as to the subject basics such as lessons on whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals and fractions.
The drafters of the curriculum have meticulously created a topical sequence which are not just effective but are also logical. As early as kindergarten, Common Core acknowledges the important role of geometry and algebraic thinking in a student’s learning process. Based on evidence, the guidelines are made with through the consultation of not just school administrators but also teachers and parents as well. It is a fact that the traditional school curriculum is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of the current demands in education and workforce today. Hence, with the participation of both institutions and parents, the standards are formulated according to findings that they have observed with their children. Improvements and enhancements as to the sequence of their learning were addressed when Common Core was created.
One of these innovations was the contemporary role that teachers now have with the Common Core guidelines. Given their own discretion in conducting their classes, teachers can now do away with limiting their methods with books and blackboards. And this is significant in engineering education as there is a need to apply the different theories learned. Once a child is able to appreciate the principles and theories, the learning must not stop there. He must be able to properly apply said lessons. In Common Core, this is the norm. For instance, after learning the basics of geometry, it is not enough that the child knows the formulas; he should know how to conduct solutions to situations involving geometry as well. With the teacher’s discretion and the administrator’s supervision, the class or the student may undergo an activity to test said knowledge.
What is particularly impressive with the guidelines that Common Core provides is that it makes sure that children do not just know the answers or solutions to the math problems given to them but also, they can justify said solutions. A yes or no is not sufficient with the Common Core education. Students are not just expected to give the right answers but they must also be able to reason out or comprehend why that is the solution to the problem. And this critical-thinking skill is a necessity in the world of engineering.
Also, just like every profession, engineering requires familiarity in the English language arts. The Common Core curriculum, aside from setting a focus on Math, also provides language lessons, which helps ensures a holistic education – something that aspiring engineers would need in life. Besides basic writing and reading lessons, students are also taught how to converse well and speak competently in the English language. Furthermore, through said program, their collaboration skills are honed so that they can effectively take part in different projects and endeavours in the future without any trouble.
Through the combination of English and Math subjects, students can now be both inspired and equipped to fulfil their engineering dreams. But of course, no matter what profession a student would like to venture in the future, Common Core education is a great training ground because of its holistic approach to learning and global competency.
